Escultura

  As obras de escultura são, em Roma, muito numerosas, multiplicam-se nos fóruns, nas ruas, nos monumentos. Os ricos adornam com elas as suas casas, quer em Roma, quer nas províncias que, em escala mais modesta, imitam a capital. Mas os escultores deixam que a criatividade dos artistas helénicos domine a produção estatuária, limitando-se muitas vezes a reproduzir réplicas de grandes obras gregas, sem no entanto deixar de imprimir nestas o seu cunho: o realismo.

Os romanos esculpem com tal realismo e expressividade que nos conseguem transmitir o carácter do modelo! Estas características evidenciavam-se sobretudo no retrato romano que acentuava os defeitos, as características fisionómicas dos olhos e das sobrancelhas, da boca, do cabelo, bem como as marcas do tempo…ao contrário dos gregos que se preocupam com o idealismo e com a perfeição, os romanos não esbatem as imperfeições. A escultura teve também como último fim a glorificação do imperador.
